Learning Acu-Points

For those interested in learning the locations of Acu-Points, the 50cm dummy shown here is of great help. Smaller versions are not advisable as, due to the reduced size, many points/cavities are omitted.

Readers studying Dian Xue are recommended to refer to the book "Death Touch" - Michael Kelly. Paladin Press, Boulder, Colorado, USA.

Disregarding the rather alarming title, this book is without doubt one of the best publications on this subject as the author uses his training as a doctor in the western tradition, to explain how and why the techniques of 'vital point manipulation' actually work.

INTRODUCTION.

"Health And Healing Arts" , presents exercises for both physical and mental wellbeing. These exercises and training methods are based on, and directly relatable to, the philosophical concepts underlying all Martial and Health systems of Asia and may be termed 'universal' as they appear in various guises in all cultures.

This philosophical matrix is commonly expressed through mathematical relationships and geometrical designs, the most well known being the "Yinyang" symbol. This symbol is explored through the exercises and training methods we promote, as are the "Five Elements" and their relationship to pentagonal geometry.

We draw on material found in Chinese Qigong and Indian Yoga and the Martial Arts of Taijiquan, Baguazhang, XingIquan, Penjak Silat and Kuntao, however, the methods presented are not exclusive to any particular faction or style. The training is pragmatic and may be practiced by anyone, irrespective of age, sex or previous experience.

As these methods are principally aimed at demonstrating how the body, and above all the mind, are able to function in a different and more effective manner, the onus is on collaboration and competition in any form is not considered an investment.

The methodology falls into the following broad categories:

Meditation.

Control of the breath.

Static and moving Qigong.

Wide Angle Peripheral Perception.

Partner training exercises.

Study of 'Vital Points'.

Self Massage.

Self Defense.

Material requiring considerable time to learn, such as the 'forms' found in Taijiquan, Baguazhang and various Gong Fu systems, or the 'katas' of Karate, are left to schools giving specialized instruction. We, instead, present short, easily memorized exercises that may be repeated at the practitioner's discretion and integrated into the particular style already being studied, thus liberating the practitioner from adherence any one particular school, organization, style or lineage of transmission.

ANTHONY WALMSLEY.

Anthony Walmsley, born in Manchester, G. B., in 1944, moved to London in the mid ‘60’s and was involved in the music business for twenty years. He played guitar and electric bass and has also been responsible for stage management and international tour organization. He has worked throughout Europe, Scandinavia, Canada and the USA and has lived in London, Paris, Rome, Naples, Positano, Oslo, New York and Los Angeles; he is now resident in Umbria, Italy. In 1984, at the age of forty, he began studying the Yang Style of Taijiquan hoping to resolve chronic lower back pains. Intrigued by the positive results, he continued his practice and in 1988 was introduced to the little know use of the art for Self Defense. In 1994 he presented the first of his public workshops in Milan, Italy, and has continued holding such events throughout Italy and the UK. His schedule also includes private lessons for small groups and individual ‘one-on-one’ tuition at his home gym. His numerous, and often controversial articles on the application of Taijiquan for both health and personal defense have been published internationally.

He was first taught the Tung family version of the Yang style Taijiquan form and was introduced to Standing Qigong and Tui Shou.

In 1988, his training took an oblique turn when he began training in methods that were overtly 'martial'.

The programme included:

- Qigong exercises and sets directly related to Martial use.

- A much more vigorous form containing many difficult and physically demanding movements.

- Chin Na.

- Falling, rolling and break-falling, similar to the approach found in Jujitsu and Aikido.

- All striking techniques; these were practiced on Focus Mitts, the Heavy Sack and with partners.

- Sensitivity Training. Tui Shou (push hands) and Nien Shou (sticking hands); the methodology differed considerably from that of the majority of schools. These exercises were practiced a very close range and included strikes, kicks and take-downs.

- Tui Tui (push feet). Again, this exercise is rarely seen in most schools today.

- San Shou combat training sets.

- Fa Jin, ‘explosive energy expression’.

- The introductory study of Dian Xue, better known as Dim Mak or ‘vital point manipulation’.

- Wide Angle Peripheral Vision, a method of increasing awareness and Spontaneous Reflex Responses.

- Self Massage utilizing Acupuncture Cavities.

He began holding weekend workshops in 1994 and has taught in Italy and the UK. Beginning in the same year a number of his articles, particularly dealing with Fa Jin, Dian Xue and Peripheral Vision Training, were published internationally.

His book, “The Master Key – reflections on the underlying matrix of Taijiquan practice” was published privately in 2006 and a further volume is in preparation. In this volume are described in detail training methods he has found of help in understanding ‘applications’ in Martial Arts Forms and katas; these methods include:

- Candle Training.

- YinYang Symbol Tui Shou, single and double hands.

- YinYang Symbol training using the feet.

- Power training.

- Partner exercises to introduce the memorisation of Acupuncture Points and their use in Dian Xue.

His approach to teaching is totally pragmatic and nothing is withheld from those interested in learning this information.
